Beaches of the Island !

VILA DO ABRAÃO:

Is located in this cove. The commercial activity is concentrated on this little but quaint place, where you can find the most developed infrastructure for tourism. It can be said that Abraão is the capital of Ilha Grande. In the village you can find many restaurants, public phones, a Post Office, a school, Emergency Center, bakeries, little groceries stores, Fire Station, Police Station, Visitors Center, Internet, clothes and a crafts stores, bars and pubs. There are NOT any cash machines or Banks,, even though many places accept credit cards, we suggest you to bring enough money for extra expenses. In Ilha Grande happens an Ecologic Music Festival in June), and a Forró Festival in December, that once a year some of important famous artists get together, and Abraão gets lots of tourist from all over the world. In July weekends also happens the traditional Fiesta Julina, with typical food, dance and fun.

Once in Abrãao village don`t forget to visit São Sebastião Church and walk around the streets and beaches, buy a crafts and try some of many delicious sweets from a famous dessert little cars that you will find around. Without hesitation, this is the best place to spend peaceful vacation. Relax and enjoy the nature.

PALMAS COVE:

In the XIX century, there was only sugar cane e coffee`s farm and Africans slaves working there. You will find in this cove the following beaches: Big Beach of Palmas, Mangues, Aroeira, Recife, and Palmas island. To get here you can rent a boat from Abraao Village, Mangaratiba, Conceicao de Jacarei or Angra dos Reis. Another option is walking from Abraao. This walk will take you about 2:30 hours.

At Palmas Cove the electric energy is supplied by generators until 10pm. This beautiful beach is very busy in the summer, esiersi disciplesgood for camping. The permanent population is basically fishermen. There are several smalls’ establishments where drinks, sandwiches, homemade food and deserts can be bought.


CASTELHANOS LIGHTHOUSE:

Located on the eastern extreme of
the island, one of the most antique lights of Brazilian coast. Built in XIX century conserves its original French style, with purely mechanic system and crystal lenses. The access is only by boat or trail (unused). This place has an amazing natural beauty.



LOPES MENDES BEACH:

It is one the pretties beaches of the Brazilian coast and the most famous in the island. Lopes Mendes is also considered by many notable tourism magazines one of the ten
most beautiful in the world. Its location transforms the place in an ocean beach of approximately 3 km of white and very fine sand. In spite of the water is amazing, as well as variation of tonalities. It is a desert beach, with little potable water. Plenty shades of the wild vegetation along the whole beach. The sea could be treacherous. However it is an excellent beach for bathing because of its scarce depth and clear waters. It is also ideal for surfing and is always visited by lovers of this sport. The access is by boat or trail from Abraao Village.



SANTO ANTONIO BEACH:

Is very pleasant beach. It has similar characteristics as its great neighbor Lopes Mendes and it is also very famous for the surf practice (warning for the rocks). White sand, rocks and heavy grove give this beach a savage nature. This beach is lonely that can usually find people practicing strippers, access for the same path to Lopes Mendes from Pouso, but on the top of the hills turns right, pay attention for the sign.



JORGE GRAGO ISLAND:

This island is inhabitated by millions of birds that nest near the rocks and the vegetation. Facing the Atlantic ocean, it is an excellent refuge for navigators that looks for a hiding place to protect themseves from the strong winds of the southeast. It is located far away from the beach, at 5,4 km of Lopes Mendes, that allows the fishing line and sub aquatic. THE LEGEND: This is one of the most tragic and famous legends of the island. A long time ago, a Greek Corsair was sailing near this island when his boat shipwrecked. Many people died, but the captain, named Jorge Grego, his daughter and his confident sailor survived. They lived together for many years, but one day the sailor fell in love with the captain`s daughter and he went mad, kill both and threw himself to the sea, giving origin the legend.



CAXADAÇO:

This beach was considered one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Taking a bath in its clear water and being surrounded by the vegetation is going to make you feel as you were dreaming. In spite of its only 15 meters, it is one of the most prominent places of the Brazilian coast. It is hidden in the seaside and its natural beauty. The access is by boat or trekking trail, but guides is required, it`s very difficult path in the jungle. The trail is not clear.



TWO RIVERS BEACH (DOIS RIOS)

Dois Rios or Lopes Mendes, what`s the best in Ilha Grande? Mmm.. very difficult question. Dois Rios has a yellowish sand and shallow fund and blue green waters. A river drains on each extremely of the beautiful beach, giving the name of Dois Rios (two rivers). Mangrove trees grown in these rivers and lots of fishes rise in this perfect ecosystem. This blinding place was the pivot of the prison`s fame. Today there are only ruins and a museum about the history of the old prison. It is possible to see the old kitchen and the admistration of the prison. The jail was demolished in 1994 with explosives. Today the property is being administered by the State University of Rio de Janeiro – SURJ that set up a Center of Environmental Studies and Sustained Development – CESSD. Nowadays a few residents and fisherman live there, some of them serves homemade meal to the visitors.

PARNAIOCA:

The beautiful Parnaioca Beach is the most isolated beaches of the whole island. Whoever visits the place today would never imagine that in the past was the most populated beach of Ilha Grande . Ruins of old constructions and a little old church done by slaves are one of the few vestiges of the great community that lived there. Nowadays few people live there. The Parnaioca River is another beauty that deserves to be known. The beach is situated in from of the Atlantic Ocean. The shade is little along its 1000m of length and sand yellowish and thick. The access is by boat or trekking trail but a guide is required. In Parnaioca there is no electric power, pousada or hotel, if you want to stay there, you have to camp.



EAST AND SOUTH BEACH:

These beaches belong to a biological reservation that was created in 1981 and is being administrated by State Foundation of Engineering and Environment – SFEE. This biological reservation shelters all the ecosystems existent in the coastal of Rio de Janeiro. Perhaps this is the only reservation in Brazil with these characteristics. The objective of the eservation is to preserve the fauna and flora species in danger of extinction. Visitors are not permitted in this reservation. Visit must be only for scientific research and they need to be expressly authorized by the SFEE. It is forbidden to fish, hunt and any other alteration of the environment.

AVENTUREIRO:



People say that this is the most paradisiacal place of Ilha Grande because of its blinding landscapes. It resists to decades without altering its particular characteristics. Here the time stopped. There is no trade in this small villa. The electric power is only for people that have generators. This beach presents 600m of fine and almost silver sand, clean and not to deep waters and an agitated sea except on its extremities, where there is a small wharf to dock boats. A little more than 100 hospitable people live in Aventureiro today. Some fishermen serve meals in their houses. There is a small church and also a school. The access is only by boat (private rent) or a tour on speed boat named Volta a ilha (around trip the island). Excellent for surfing. Camping (Authorization by Angra dos Reis government is required) is the only option if you want to spend some days in this little piece of paradise.

MEROS AND DRAGO:

Meros beach is a little beach between two mountains. It has lot of palms, transparent water and it is usually deserted. It`s possible to see few vestiges from an old civilization, who lived in the island 3000 years ago. For those who visit the place, it is as being in the paradise. At the entrance of the beach, you will see a particular figure named DO DRAGAO. This is a natural figure of rocks that looks like a dragon. Its outline is always a worry for the navigators of the region, because the waves are strong and impact on this figure.



PROVETA:

Nowadays, this is the second town with more resident population of Ilha Grande and big economic importance. Its principal characteristic is the fact that most of the population belongs to the evangelical community. Not have structure for tourism. The water is calm and clear, and the sand is thick and yellowish. You will discover a lovely beach but without stable tourist activity. Proveta is an entrance to the continent through the southeast coast of the island. The economy is based on the embarked fishing and the commerce.
The electric energy is provided by net submarine since 2001. There is one elementary public school and a public telephone office. The communication with Angra it is daily through fishing ships.



ACAIA’S CAVE:

It is an interesting and certainly amazing place. The fluorescent water in sunny days phenomenon is impressive. The color and tonality of the water varies from light blue to green emerald, depending on the intensity of the sun. The water`s foam gives the impression of diamonds shining. The cave has about 30 meters of length and a medium height of 1 meter. It is a horizontal rift inside a rock with a beach of submerged stones. The access is only descending through a narrow path inside the cavern. As the cave is located inside a private property, an entrance fee must be paid. You can also access by diving by the sea using diving equipments, but that is only for professional because the distances are not short and the tides can be treacherous.

VERMELHA BEACH:

This beach receives annually a considerable numbers of diving lovers that starts from the submarine expeditions to see the different shipwrecks. This beach presents 100 meters extension of thick sand.



ARACATIBA COVE:

They are three beautiful beaches united by a Road trail of 1 km. These beaches are: Big Beach of Aracatiba, Aracatibinha and Cachoeira beach. It has Calm and clean waters, fine sand and lots of serenity, great for swimming and bathing. The beach is almost dessert and there is a pier that belongs to an old factory sardines` cans.



GREEN LAGOON:

This lagoon has not deep waters and typically green. Is one of the highlights of the northwest coast of the island. It`s one of the few places ii the planet that will find greenish coral. Perfect spot to swim with smalls and colorful fishes that wait for
bread crumbs. Don`t captures starfishes or other marines being. Don`t forget you are in an environmental preservation area.



SITIO FORTE COVE:

There are three beaches. Ubatubinha beach has a dock, old constructions , a bar and a restaurant. Tapera beach is a portrait of peacefulness. There are lots of palms, a little bar and private properties. Sitio Forte Beach had an important activity at the time of the slavery and the sugar cane industry. Ruins of old big houses may be found in the beach`s proximities. Today its lands are private. Maguariquissaba and Passaterra the tourist activity prevails. Both have wharf and restaurants in the beaches. They are amazing for swimming, practicing snorkel and bathing. Maguariquissaba is na operative base of mussels cultivation project in Ilha Grande, this is na alternative activities for the fishermen.



BANANAL COVE:

This is the third community with more population in the Island. A strong Japanese influence can be noticed here. It used to be a place dedicates to fishing and the exportation of bananas. This is a quiet place to rest, with exuberant forest and
calmed green water. Besides wasting your time under the shade of a tree or sleeping in the net bed, you have other activities such as dive: Bananal is another starting point to visit the penguin navy, shipwrecked a few years ago in the bay of Sitio Forte which is very close.
Another attraction is the wrecked helicopter that rest in the beach of Matariz.The big and small beach of Bananal – Has two docks, lodgings, restaurants, dive operators and a little fishermen community. The access is only by boat or by trail. You will find the
ruins of a canned sardine`s factory that are being recycle to be Inns. Matariz -The last canned fish factory worked here a few years ago. A small fishermen community lives here. Here you will find a little bar, a public school and a dock. Jacomena length, the water is transparent, and just few families live here.



BLUE LAGOON (LAGOA AZUL)



The lagoon is natural piscine created between in the Macaco`s Island (monkeys `islands) Lagoa Azul because the blue tonalities of the water, and it is a sensational
attraction, a paradisiacal place of calm and shallow waters, and millions of yellow and black little fishes waiting for some bread given by the visitors’ boats. This is a perfect place to practice snorkel.

FREGUESIA DE SANTANA

It was the center of the economic development of Ilha Grande during the last century. Today is an outstanding tourist point. The beach offers a lot of shade and is perfect for bathing. Is a populous beach because is located in the middle of the boat tour from Abraão to Blue lagoon and invite the visitors to go down and visit the first church built in Ilha Grande (1796).



JAPARIZ AND FUNIL BEACH:

The intimacy among the mountain, the Forest and the sea can be seen in this beach. The beach of Japariz is inhabited by fishermen that in summer receive a great amount of tourist in their restaurants. The funil`s (funnel) beach is the closest neighbor of Japariz. It has about 10 meters of length and it is deserted. It is practically imperceptible for those who pass by boat because it is hidden in natural hallway formed by hills covered of vegetation.



SACO DO CÉU (SKY BAG):

It is an ecological sanctuary. The sea is as calm as a lake and in the night the stars reflects their light in the surface of the water, this is the reason about the given name. The coast is formed by mangrove trees and protected by its irregular geography. In the summer the boats natural protection of place are ideal for the practice of aquatic ski and Jet Ski. It is also an excellent place for anchor.



ENSEADA DAS ESTRELAS (STARS COVE)

In this cove you will see Feiticeira, Iguacu, Camiranga, Grande and de Fora beach. The
starfishes inhabit in great number at the bottom of this bay – that is the origin of the name. The sea is very green and calm. The beaches are good for bathing and snorkeling. Nowadays, several fishermen families live in the coast. Praia Grande and Praia de fora -these beaches has 500 meters of extension. They are narrow and with little shade. In the fora beach drains the Perequê River, which has the biggest volume of sweet water of the island.



BEWITCH WATTERFALL (CACHOEIRA DA FEITICEIRA)

– This pretty waterfall is hidden in the mountain. The access is by trail from Abraão or by boat from Feiticeira Beach, for who are not well prepared could be a tiring walk but for sure is a reward for those that achieve to get to the fall. On the top of the waterfall there is a natural slide, and for those who like a symbol of the island for the Abraão village and it can be seen from all over the place.
